Theme: Collaborative Entrepreneur Development – A Game Changer in a Challenging Business Ecosystem
The Forum provides a platform for financing professionals, policy makers and market players to discuss alternative models in addressing challenges in developing entrepreneurs of the emerging markets. Acknowledging the ever - changing landscape of the current business ecosystems, there is a need to share experiences, propose models and explore innovative solutions to not only sustain high growth of the entrepreneurs, but more importantly, to appreciate the need to insulate the risk positions of both the enterprises and the financiers when facing volatile and uncertain business scenarios. The relevance of mitigating risks differently and offering a more palatable financier – entrepreneur business relationships cannot be overemphasized. The offerings of advisory services, nurturing, coaching and building capacities of entrepreneurs, in the spirit of financier-entrepreneur business-partnership, has become the order of the day. This session shall discuss some of the key strategic issues, proposals and their limitations as experienced by both the financing institutions, as well as the entrepreneurs at large. Issues confronting both divides between the entrepreneurs and the financiers have taken different complexion and intricate dimension by the rapid changing economic landscape and investors’ expectations. As such, the financing structures require innovative approach and packaging that match and map both the requirements and their expectations, in particular their returns on investments. PLENARY 3 Managing Risks – Alternative Models in a Collaborative Entrepreneurial Environment Risk-return complexion has always been a key consideration in addressing both financing requirements as well as entrepreneur investment decisions. However, in a changing business environment, there is a need to explore risk mitigation models differently, without compromising the positions of both the financiers and the entrepreneurs at large. Some of the Islamic banking proponents have often put forth the viability and practicality of offering the Islamic partnership principles of musyarakah as an alternative for instance, as compared to the arguably riskier conventional mode. However experiences at the market place have indicated different outcomes and complexities, both in support or otherwise. The session shall discuss such experiences and offer alternative models – the prerequisites for actions and their implications, as experienced by some leading financiers as well as entrepreneurs in managing these inherent investment – business risks. PLENARY 4 Cross Border Engagement – The Challenges of the DFIs’ and SMEs’ Collaboration in Sustaining Growth Entrepreneurs involved in cross-border engagement offers face issues in enhancing both market: as well as financing access. There are made more challenging by not only the foreign risk exposure, but ever changing business landscape of participating countries, their political-legal risks, technological requirements, resource talents and the likes. The risks escalate further when the financing products availability and cross-border participating DFIs are limited in their offerings. While established multinational corporations would be in a better position to stear such cross-border business deals, the situations are more perplexing for the SMEs. This session shall discuss such challenges and explore means of addressing such issues, in the context of initiating structured networks of a collaborative DFIs – SMEs environment.
