Mission

The Master of Science (MS) program in Banking and Finance at Eastern Mediterranean University is designed to equip graduate students with specialized analytical skills applicable to their professional interests in corporate finance, investment appraisal/cost-benefit analysis, project finance, financial risk management, commercial and investment banking, international finance, and financial economics. The MS program gives students the opportunity to develop one or more areas of academic and professional specialization in addition to the program’s core curriculum in finance.


PROGRAMS

The graduate students may earn their MS degree in Banking and Finance in two ways:

(A) Courses plus thesis (B) Courses plus term paper.


MS in Banking and Finance (seven courses plus thesis).

This option for earning an MS degree in Banking and Finance requires four core courses plus three elective courses and a master’s thesis. This program is designed to be completed in one year of full-time study. The degree can also be completed with a part-time schedule in two years. This program is suitable for people who aim to develop one area of specialization beyond the core curriculum.

The four core courses are: BANK 501 (Asset and Liability Management), FINA 503 (Investments), FINA 517 (Corporate Finance) and FINA 521 (Investment Appraisal). In addition, the graduate student must complete a further three electives courses. The MS thesis is completed in conjunction with the Seminar in Banking and Finance.


MS in Banking and Finance (ten courses plus term paper)

This option for earning the MS degree in Banking and Finance consists of successfully completing the four core courses plus the completion of a further six elective courses and a term paper. This program is designed to be completed in one year of full-time study. The degree can also be completed with part-time schedule in two years. The core curriculum consists of the same four courses as the thesis option: BANK 501 (Asset and Liability Management), FINA 503(Investments), FINA 517 (Corporate Finance) and FINA 521 (Investment Appraisal).This program is designed for individuals who wish to develop two areas of specialization beyond the core curriculum.




AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION

1. Banking

The Department of Banking and Finance offers a wide range of elective courses through its collaborative agreement with the Institute of Canadian Bankers (ICB). Students who complete the four core courses of the MS degree program and successfully complete three elective ICB courses will obtain a professional diploma called the Associate of the Institute of Canadian Bankers (AICB). This professional certification has proven to be very helpful to graduates in securing outstanding international positions in banking.


2. Investment Appraisal and Risk Analysis

Students who successfully complete FINA 521 (Investment Appraisal), FINA 522 (Project Finance and Risk Management), and FINA 623 (Advanced Capital Budgeting) or ECON 622 (Economic Cost-Benefit Analysis) will be eligible to take the comprehensive examination offered by Queen’s University, Canada to obtain a professional certification in Investment Appraisal and Risk Analysis. This professional program on the appraisal of investment projects was founded in 1985 at Harvard University and was offered there until 2000. Since then has been conducted at Queen’s University, Canada and Duke University, USA. To date there are over 2000 graduates of the program from over 50 countries. It has become the gold standard for academic and professional training in this field and it is highly sought after by employers internationally. For those students who select this field of specialization it is recommended that they take as one of their elective courses Econ 501 Microeconomics in order to strengthen their analytical skills in this field For students wishing to obtain a specialization in the public sector aspects of this field might also wish to take ECON 635 (Public Finance) to develop their analytical skills in the areas of revenue mobilization, and budgeting.

3. Finance and Risk Management

For students who wish to become financial analysts, financial advisors, professionals working in the capital market or related areas, should consider building an area of specialization in finance and risk management. An illustrative set of courses are as follows: BANK 504 (Research Methods in Banking and Finance), FINA 506 (Financial Risk Management), and FINA 505 (International Finance). This area of specialization should be considered by individuals who wish to take the examination leading to the Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA) designation.


4. Financial Economics

For students who wish to acquire advanced analytical skills in both finance and economics, the following set courses would allow them to build an area of specialization in financial economics. These courses will also provide a good foundation for those wishing to undertake a Ph.D. Degree Program in either economics or finance. The recommended courses are: Econ 501(Microeconomics), Econ 502 (Macroeconomics), and Econ 503 (Econometrics). Students might wish to take additional elective courses in economics and finance to strengthen their analytical foundations in on or more fields of application.


INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIONS


AICB Designation in Banking


Graduate student in the Department of Banking and Finance has an option to earn the Associate of the Institute of Canadian Banker (AICB) designation. Graduate students who take 3 elective courses on-line from the Institute of Canadian Bankers obtain the professional designation, AICB in addition to their MS degree in Banking and Finance from EMU. ICB courses do not require an additional tuition fee since they are taken as part of the program’s curriculum and the courses taken from ICB are counted towards the degree.


Queen’s University Certificate


The Department of Banking and Finance at Eastern Mediterranean University has an agreement with the John Deutsch International Executive Programs of Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada that enable graduate students of EMU to earn the Queen’s University Certificate in Investment Appraisal and Risk Analysis. This is a renowned professional certificate in the area of investment appraisal that graduate students can obtain while studying at Eastern Mediterranean University. By taking three courses from the discipline of investment appraisal at EMU, students qualify to take the Queen’s University comprehensive examination in this field and if successful, then are awarded this professional certification. The Queen’s University comprehensive examination can be conducted at Queen’s University or at EMU.


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS


In order to be admitted to the Master’s Program in Banking and Finance, the applicant must satisfy the following requirements:

  • The applicant must have a B.A Diploma or the equivalent, demonstrating that he/she has satisfactorily graduated from university.

  • The applicant must demonstrate proficiency in English; hold minimum TOEFL score of 550, or an equivalent test score; or passes the proficiency examination at EMU in order to be permitted to register for the Master’s program.
