IRTI-ADFIMI Joint Seminar on “Risk Management in Islamic Banking”, El Mouradi Africa Hotel Tunis, Tunisia, 14-15 November 2017

Background:

The IRTI-ADFIMI Seminar provided an exclusive occasion in deliberations on present-day issues in Risk Management in Islamic Banking. It also provided a platform for discussion on the cutting-edge processes related to evolving trends in market practices, practical supervisory issues.

Program Summary:

Seminar on Risk Management in Islamic Banking concentrated on the management of a wide collection of risks in-built in Islamic banking industry. Audience was able to gain perspective and practicalities of the various aspects of risk management in Islamic banks and the implications of surrounding regulatory and market developments in a speedily evolving environment. Participants attained a value-added assessment on risk governance from prudential perspective as well as business risk management from a market-player perspective. The recipients also figured out the up-to-date changes in the management of peculiar characteristics of risks encountered by Islamic banks, including market risk, credit and liquidity risks, and legal and Shari’ah non-compliance risks.

The seminar was conducted in the French Language, since it was meant for the benefit of the African and Magreb Region, most of which are French-speaking countries. Since some ADFIMI Members, as well as foreign participants showed interest in participating in the seminar, French-English simultaneous translation was arranged by ADFIMI on its own cost.

Bilateral Arrangements

A new MOU was signed between ADFIMI and IRTI on 25.10.2017. ADFIMI accordingly was responsible with the identification of the venue and resource person(s). Upon mutual consensus, EL Mouradi Africa Hotel Tunis was selected as the venue and Mr. Wadi Mzid, Director Corporate of Zitouna Bank Tunisia was identified as the seminar manager. Seminar syllabus was also mutually agreed upon by parties. ADFIMI approached Association of Bankers of Tunisia to help in the visa issuance for the participants who require a visa to enter Tunisia, and share the logistical burden. A flyer was prepared in both the English and the French languages by ADFIMI, and displayed the finally agreed schedule as well as the resume of the seminar manager, Mr. Wadi Mzid.

Participants

Mr. Habib Haoula, Deputy Governor of Islamic Development Bank’s Regional Office invited 15 more participants from Tunisia and they were considered as participants from IRTI.

The total number of participants was 44, from which nine were from ADFIMI Member institutions (two from Ziraat Participation Bank, three from Omdurman National Bank Sudan, one from El Nilein Bank Sudan, two from TEKUN Nasional Malaysia and one from African Solidarity Fund).

The participants were from 14 countries (Tunisia, Turkey, Malaysia, Sudan, Iran, Niger, Palestine, Mauritania, Jordan, Egypt, Libya, Lebanon, Morocco and Algeria).

Proceedings

The seminar began as scheduled. SG Nuri Birtek made his welcoming remarks and expressed his gratitude to IRTI for their support as well as to Mr. Wadi Mzid for accepting to be the workshop manager.

Mr. Habib Houala, Deputy Governor of IDB Regional Office, was the second speaker. He emphasized the importance of Risk Management in Islamic Finance, especially in the IDB Member Countries.

Mr. Mohamed Tawab, Learning Program Specialist, IRTI was the third speaker who thanked ADFIMI and Mr. Wadi Mzid, seminar manager for the cooperation in the organization of the seminar and the participants for their interest. He also described IRTI to the audience. A group photo was taken after the welcoming remarks with all the participants.

At the request of Mr. Wadi Mzid, the seminar began by participants introducing themselves. Thereafter the seminar proceeded as scheduled and ended on 15 November 2017 at 17.00 hrs with seminar evaluation and a certificate ceremony.

Certificates were prepared by IRTI and were distributed jointly by Mr. Nuri Birtek, Mr. Mohamed Tawab and Mr. Wadi Mzid.

SG Nuri Birtek presented Mr. Wadi Mzid, seminar manager and Mr. Mohamed Tawab, Learning Program Specialist, IRTI with tokens of appreciation.

English-French and French-English simultaneous translation was also provided.

Overall the seminar can be considered a success evidenced by the attendance and interactive discussion by the participants.

Evaluation forms were prepared and collected by IRTI.
